Altai State Medical University, one of the premier medical institutes in Russia, was established in 1954 with a faculty of 32 members and a mere 200 students. This distinguished institution offers a wide range of medical courses, catering not only to Russian students but also to international students. Presently, Altai State Medical University provides quality education to over 4,000 students annually. Its outstanding reputation has earned it recognition from prestigious organizations such as the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), and the National Medical Council (NMC). 

About the University 

Altai State Medical University, formerly known as Altai State Medical Institute, Barnaul, Russia, was founded in the year 1954 with 32 faculty members. With unwavering experience in delivering quality medical education to aspiring doctors, ASMU has become one of the best universities in Russia. The university is well known for conducting high-quality research with a team of 25,000 doctors and pharmaceutics for the regional healthcare system. Since its inception, this prestigious institute has produced 30,000 graduates. Around 4,000 students appear for medical programs at the university annually from all over the world. 

Altai State Medical University is also acknowledged by the Ministry of Education and Research of the Russian Federation. The university also publishes its scientific journal “Bulletin of Medical Science” which encourages students to keep indulging in research work, conferences, seminars, etc. Due to its well-equipped laboratories and research facilities, this university stands as one of the central hubs for research, education, and cultural exchange.

Academic Staffs 

Since the inception of the Altai State Medical University, the ASMU has witnessed rapid growth owing to its quality education which is made possible only by its expert faculty members and teachers.  The academic staff of the university has over 100 physicians and 350 science candidates, as well as three representative RAMS members, 25 eminent Russian surgeons, five prominent Russian scientists, and 10 remarkable college staff.

Admission Process 

Students who aspire to pursue their medical studies at Altai State Medical Institutes must follow these steps to get admitted to the university. 

Step 1: Fill up the admission form. The admission form is usually available online 

Step 2: Submit the required documents with the application form 

Step 3: Wait for the invitation letter from the university 

Step 4: Apply for a student visa, after receiving the invitation letter, the student must contact the Russian embassy of his/her country of residence.  

Step 5: Clear all the outstanding fees including the tuition fees, accommodation charges, and other expenses 

Step 6: Get ready to travel to Russia and you are all set to join the university 

Documents to be submitted 

Students are required to produce the following documents at the time of admission: 

1. Class 10 passing certificate 

2. Class 12 passing certificate 

3. Birth Certificate 

4. Valid identity proof 

5. Passport size photograph 

6. Medical certificate including HIV status report 

Eligibility Criteria 

To pursue higher education at Altai State Medical University, students are required to meet specific criteria. These include:

• At least 50% marks to be secured in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 

• Student must be 17 years old as of December 31 of the admission year 

Note: Indian students must qualify for NEET (50th percentile for general/EWS category and 40th percentile for reserved category). International students are required to qualify for the university’s entrance examination.

Amenities & Infrastructure 

Being one of the oldest universities in the region, the Altai State Medical University is equipped with all the modern facilities required to conduct excellent research and training programs. To upgrade its research facilities, ASMU has also established a medical research and educational complex in collaboration with a Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It boasts great facilities and is well-equipped with 35 research laboratories. The university’s library has a great collection of over 330,000 copies of literature including various publications on medical dissertations, journals, and over 200 titles of periodic editions. To hone the professional skills of students, the university has its own clinic and training center, in addition, it indulges students in medical care of the patients under expert supervision. 

Life at ASMU 

Altai State Medical University doesn’t limit students to the classroom, rather, it offers a vibrant and exciting student life full of learning opportunities, great experiences, and memories that last a lifetime. To accommodate native as well as international students, Altai State Medical University has student dormitories as well. Campus hostels are well-equipped with modern amenities to facilitate students in their daily activities, including modern kitchens for cooking, sports, reading spaces, and counselor’s offices.

The university also had a Students League, a social organization of Altai University students. Students with interests in painting, drawing, music, dancing, etc., students can join various clubs and also participate in various social activities organized by the university.

ASMU students have the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Barnaul. Located at the confluence of the Barnaulka and Ob rivers, it is one of the largest city and administrative centers of Altai Krai, Russia. Altai is famous for its picturesque views of high mountains, mountain rivers, mysterious caves, and deserted spaces.
