The National Research Nuclear University, MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute), traces its roots to the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition which was founded in 1942. Later, the Russian Nuclear University MEPhI was established with the joint efforts of leading Russian scientists including the head of the Soviet Atomic Project, Igor Kurchatov, who played an important role in the foundation and establishment of this esteemed university.
This prestigious university produces six Nobel prize winners in its due course of history who have worked there, namely, Nikolay Basov, Andrei Sakharov, Nikolay Semenov, Igor Tamm, Ilya Frank, and Pavel Cherenkov. In 1954, the university underwent significant changes and was renamed the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI).
Presently, NRNU stands as the foremost research institute in Russia, dedicated to the comprehensive training of engineers and scientists across a spectrum of over 100 specialized fields. Remarkably, it holds the esteemed global ranking of 483 among the world's preeminent engineering institutes, underscoring its international recognition and influence. Additionally, NRNU has earned its place among the top 200 global universities within the European region.
About the University
The history of NRNU began with the foundation of the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition in 1942. Following its establishment, the prestigious Russian nuclear university, MEPhI, emerged with the invaluable contribution of eminent Soviet scientists, including the renowned head of the USSR atomic project, academician Igor Kurchatov.
Since 2014, the university has been following the CDIO World Initiative and Standards for the modernization of engineering education in higher education aiming at improving the training of highly qualified engineers. This university has obtained international accreditation from the Federation of National Engineering Associations and the Agency for Accreditation of Engineering Education Programs.
NRNU encourages students to actively participate in various scientific works from the very beginning of their academic journey. They are actively involved in laboratories, departments, and research centers of the university.
The university also collaborates with international partners to cater to students worldwide. The leading foreign partners include European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN, Switzerland), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, USA), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL, USA), Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL, USA), National accelerator laboratory Enrico Fermi (Fermilab, USA), German Electron Synchrotron (DESY, Germany), Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (Germany), etc.

Institute of Laser and Plasma Technology
The Institute of Laser and Plasma Technology offers rigorous training to its students so as to develop their professional skills. They adopt a project-oriented form of training for its students, to enhance their intellectual and technical capabilities, the institute is well equipped with scientific laboratories and educational centers. The Institute of Laser and Plasma Technology provides its students with an opportunity to undergo an internship at leading national and international scientific and educational institutions.
To encourage students to actively participate in various academic activities, this institute organizes regular thematic lectures by leading scientists on the ongoing trends in the fields of theoretical physics, ultra-strong laser fields, quantum metrology, radiation and beam technologies, etc.
Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine
The Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine offers comprehensive learning to its students in the fields of engineering and physical technologies for biomedicine including nuclear and translational medicine. They involve students in scientific activities during the learning process, as well as provide internship opportunities for students at foreign partner universities.
This institute involves students in conducting extensive scientific research in the areas of biomedical technologies to develop early diagnosis and targeted treatment of cancer and other socially significant diseases.
Institute of Nanoengineering in Electronics, Spintronics and Photonics
The Institute of Nanoengineering in Electronics, Spintronics, and Photonics is dedicated to educating graduates with profound knowledge and contemporary research methodologies in the realms of science and technology. Institute of Cyber Intelligence Systems

Admission Process
To get admission to the National Research Nuclear University, MEPhI, the student must go through the following admission procedure:
Step 1: Fill out the admission form which is available on the university’s official website
Step 2: Submit all the required documents with the application
Step 3: Wait for the invitation letter from the university
Step 4: After receiving the admission letter from the university, the student must contact the Russian embassy of his/her country of residence for a visa application
Step 5: Clear all the dues that generally include the tuition fee, cost of accommodation, and other charges
Step 6: Travel to Russia, and you are all set to join the university
Eligibility Criteria
To secure admission at NRNU, the student must meet the following criteria:
